For those unfamiliar with ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), it is a free online tool that allows you to submit text-based queries on various topics. When you visit the website, you’ll see example questions such as “Please briefly describe quantum computing.” ChatGPT also provides a place to enter specific questions. It’s not hard to see how students can use this tool, and why some teachers and school administrators are so desperate to find cheating.

But is it really a “scam”? And are teens really using it?
