Tanzania’s opposition Chadema Party has held its first public rally since the ban imposed by former President John Magafri was lifted.
With the 2016 ban lifted by the current president, Samia Sulf Hassan, hopes of greater political freedom have risen and party members want to make the most of this opportunity.
Tanzania’s first female president has reached out to rivals, reopened banned media outlets and overturned some of Magufuli’s most controversial policies.
The rally marked the 30th anniversary of the party’s political registration.
“We will organize as many rallies as possible to reach every district and village in the country,” Sherifa Suleiman, deputy chairman of Chadema’s women’s department, said.
Supporters dressed in the party colors of blue, red, and white sang songs praising their leaders, watched by a handful of police officers.
Speaking to the crowd, Chadema chairman Freeman Mbowe added: [the opposition and ruling party] We need a settlement on this, and that requires an independent election commission. ”
Advocates cautiously welcome recent developments as a move towards greater democracy in Tanzania.
The president hopes Hassan has been in power for 22 months and breaks some of Magufuli’s hardline policies.
