NEW HARTFORD, Connecticut (WTNH) — Brynley Oberempt prepares to hit the trails surrounded by three seasoned friends.
Karen Cook, executive director of the Summit Adaptive Sports Program, said:
The 17-year-old, who has a genetic condition, can’t speak, but Brinley’s joy is palpable.
“It’s great feedback. A giggle down the mountain tells you that,” said her mother, Brandi Oberempt.
It’s all thanks to the state’s only ski sundown adaptive sports program.
“All ages, all abilities,” Cook said.
It has recently been taken over by a local group, in contrast to the previous national organization.
“Being local helped us recruit more volunteers, recruit more participants, and raise more funding,” Cook said.
In fact, Cook is the mother of an autistic son who recently said she raised $80,000. Part of that is funding amazing sit-ski chairs that allow people with mobility problems to steer and enjoy the feeling of skiing.
“A device like this costs about $8,000,” says Cook. “The lessons are one-on-one with him, but he may have two or three coaches if needed.”
Some athletes need that special equipment. Some, like Brynn, just need skis or a snowboard. She gets in right away.
“We fell in love instantly, she’s been there five times now. I hope one day she’ll be our coach,” Cook said.
And that’s exactly what this experience is all about. It is to improve participants’ social skills, independence and self-esteem.
“Their mental health is that they’re out in the winter and not trapped inside,” Cook said.
Brinley’s mom said the experience was a game-changer for the whole family.
“It’s the most amazing program because you can bring all three kids in one place and do exactly what siblings can do,” said Oberempt.

“It’s amazing. Nothing asks for more than to see her doing the same with her friends and family,” said Oberempt.
Summit Adaptive Sports offers hiking, kayaking, mountain biking and disc golf for all abilities, even in the warmer months.
