Demopolis High School students are successful public relations officers and business managers.
The students have spent weeks coordinating a local concert with Jim Mowery, a singer and former contestant on NBC’s “The Voice.”
Reach and Teach helped launch the venture. Since its inception, the program has worked with high school students in the Southeast to perform over 60 concerts on school campuses. The program teaches high school students the concepts of business, marketing and entrepreneurship by giving them the opportunity to plan, promote and run concerts.

Executive Director of Reach and Teach and former high school business teacher, April Clarke, along with her former student Ashlyn Brown, helped found the organization in Layton, Alabama.

“I’m one of two students who piloted the first-ever Reach and Teach concert,” Brown said. “During high school, I won a website design competition at the Alabama FBLA State Conference, qualifying me to compete at the national level in California.
Brown was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, a high school business program. Clark was her advisor. Together, the team worked with the school’s sports and entertainment marketing class to put on a successful concert.
Apart from the actual concert, students have other responsibilities. Hosting podcasts and producing video broadcasts.
Demopolis students have been working on the program over the past few months under the guidance of marketing teacher Courtney Kerby.
“This is the second Reach and Teach concert we have held at Demopolis High School. Kirby said. “We hope the Reach and Teach concert will become an annual event in Demopolis.”
“Each school we work with is different because students think differently,” says Clark. “We are working with schools all over the Southeast and it is exciting to see our students’ creativity come to life through this real-world opportunity.”
Reach and Teach is part of Kerby’s Digital Marketing class. This is her second of her two classes in the school’s marketing program. The main goal of this class is to give you a hands-on experience of a real event as the final product. Students sell sponsorships to local businesses, generate excitement for concerts, and encourage fellow classmates to attend.
Concert planning and details are completely in the students’ hands, from concert titles and performers to logos, ticket prices, social media ads and promotional t-shirts. Students may even create their own budgets. Sponsorships will be sold to local businesses to keep costs down for students, with breakfast and lunch with the band, t-shirts, and a limited number of VIP tickets including front row seats to the concert.
“This program requires a lot of creativity and public speaking. I’ve seen students build confidence through this program, and that’s the most challenging aspect.” Supporting students and schools I’m so lucky to have a community that cares.”
The concert begins on February 1st at 2:15pm in the Demopolis High School gymnasium. Student general admission tickets are $15 and student VIP tickets are $45.
