Milwaukee — Step Africa! They step onto the stage of the Marcus Performing Arts Center, but it turns out they’ll be staying for a while.
Step Africa! A three-day residency at the Marcus Center will take place from January 18-20, the Marcus Center announced Thursday. Step Africa! An award-winning African-American step dance company.

Founded in 1994, Step Afrika! is the world’s first professional dance company dedicated to stepping.
“Stepping is a percussive and highly energetic art form that was first developed through song and dance rituals performed by African American fraternity groups and sororities. It uses applause, spoken words to create complex polyrhythms,” says Step Afrika!

The company says its shows combine traditional stepping with dance from West and South Africa, contemporary dance and other art forms such as singing, storytelling and humor.
Residency begins Wednesday with an intermediate dance workshop for adults in the Bradley Pavilion. Green Bay Packers veteran and community advocate Donald Driver will be in attendance. At 7:30 PM, the driver will host the ‘Kami 9 Roll Call Showcase’. Divine 9 is one of the “nine largest African American Greek letter fraternity and sororities in history,” including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and Omega Psi Phi. union”. Berthena, President of Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. The National Pan-Hellenic Council in Brister Milwaukee will speak as well. The showcase is located at the Wilson Theater in Vogel Hall and is free and open to the public.

Thursday’s “Step Afrika!” hosts a youth dance workshop with drivers and local high school students at the Bradley Pavilion from 4:30-5:30pm. .

“Step Africa! promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people, with a focus on teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding,” said the Marcus Center.

Starting at 10am on Friday we have Step Africa. Student matinee performance for 2,000 Milwaukee-area children at Uihlein Hall. That show is already sold out.
