SINGAPORE — China began reopening its borders today (8 January) after nearly three years of self-isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is reportedly launching a large-scale marketing campaign aimed at Chinese tourists visiting Singapore.
China remains an important market for Singapore, the STB noted.
“Throughout the pandemic, STB has continued to build affinity for Singapore as a destination among Chinese travelers,” said Andrew Poor, STB’s Greater China Executive Director. .
“With China reopening its borders from January 8 and outbound travel soon imminent, STB has partnered with Chinese travel agency CTrip to launch a joint marketing campaign focused on pre-booking quality and premium experiences. I’ll start,” he added.
“This is the first promotional destination campaign by STB and CTrip since the latest announcement in China.”
He said the STB will prepare for the resumption of outbound travel from China by continuing its marketing and trade engagement efforts.
A Chinese citizen told The Straits Times that he was looking forward to coming to Singapore. Beijing-based Colin Li plans to travel in April or his May.
But first he has to renew his passport, which expired two years ago. China has suspended passport renewals for non-essential travel in July 2021 to prevent new he Covid-19 variants from being brought into the country. China’s immigration authorities have now announced that they will resume issuing new passports to Chinese nationals wishing to travel to the country.
Another Beijing-based resident is Liu Yue. She has been eyeing Singapore as her destination since seeing a clip of her online video featuring the skyline of Marina Her Bay over a year ago. She said that Singapore is “fun, good food and shopping, but expensive.” Still, she comes eagerly.
Her passport also expired two years ago and should be renewed first as the Chinese authorities have resumed issuing passports.
Many countries have imposed or are considering restricting travelers from China, alarming the sharp rise in COVID-19 and the lack of transparency in data distribution in China. .
