Artist Maria Isa dropped “Capitolio” the same day she was sworn in at Minnesota House.
ST. PAUL, MN — Music lovers at Twin Cities have known Maria Isa for a long time. She started her hip-hop career in her teens and since then she has shared the stage with major artists such as Wu Tang Her Clan and Bad Her Bunny.
Today, she joins 133 members of the Minnesota House of Representatives, making her the first hip-hop artist to serve in the state legislature. – Also known as Vega state legislator. She represents House District 65B in St. Paul where she grew up.
“I’m a Puerto Rican born in Minnesota, so I call myself a Sotarican,” Perez Vega said. “That’s the name of the label I’ve had since I was 22… The sound is hip-hop. The sound is soul.”
Pérez-Vega says the music doesn’t stop when the session starts. In fact, 12 hours before she took her oath of office in her Capitol on Tuesday, she released the album “Capitolio” on her own label, SotaRico Records, and partnered with her Perfect Noize Entertainment. “This album is also a fun topic about equality in women’s rights,” Perez-Vega said.

“I definitely give everyone a driver’s license,” she said of the session’s priorities. A federal state of Puerto Rico has a driver’s license for illegal immigrants, so why doesn’t Minnesota, a progressive state, have a driver’s license?”
Pérez-Vega said he also plans to support the Teachers of Color Act and will serve on the Housing Commission.
