Standard Notes might be the best note-taking app on the market

I am a big proponent of open source technology and prefer open source software over proprietary software whenever possible. That doesn’t mean everything I use is open source. For example, we use Spotify, Slack, Zoom, Opera, and many other non-open software apps. I also use it on my Linux operating system.

So when I was looking for a note-taking application, I came across an application like Evernote, which happened to have an app for the Linux desktop.

I’ve used Evernote and think it’s a great tool. Evernote is everything you need in a note-taking app. But it’s proprietary, and when I see open source options like Standard Notes, I love it.

Standard Notes has three different plans:

• Standard: free, end-to-end encryption, unlimited device sync, plain text notes, offline access, tags, password protected notes, full data export, two-factor authentication, daily encrypted email backups , and community support.
• Productivity: $90/year, everything in Standard plus markdown, rich text, spreadsheets, checklists, daily notebooks, folders, 1 year note revision history, and premium support.
• Professional: $120/year, all of Productivity plus 100GB encrypted cloud storage, sharing with up to 5 accounts, Moments, unlimited file size, offline file access, locally stored file backup, up to Revision History, and Premium Support.

Standard accounts work fine for most users. But if you want to be able to create rich text, markup, spreadsheets, checklists, or code, you’ll need to upgrade to the Productivity Plan.

However, if you’re just taking quick notes, the Standard account is a good choice.

Standard accounts allow you to take basic text-based notes and use them to:

• Add tags.
• Pin it to the top of the list.
• Password protection.
• Star.
• write out.

There’s also a built-in spell checker and the ability to lock it to prevent editing. To make this even more attractive, the Standard Notes UI is very easy to use. Standard Notes may even be said to be fairly basic in its design. For many users, its simplified design means the application has a very shallow learning curve. I can’t imagine anyone opening the standard app and not immediately familiarizing themselves with the tool. And Standard Notes can be installed on Linux, MacOS, Windows, Web, Android, and iOS, so you can sync your notes to any device you use.

One caveat when installing on Linux is that you are limited to either AppImage or Snap packages. I have tried both and found that they both work equally well. However, I prefer the Snap package because it allows me to update without having to download a new His AppImage.

Is Standard Notes Right for You?

Well, the free version of Standard Notes is pretty limited in the types of notes you can add. If so, the Standard plan works fine.

However, if you’re looking for a drop-in alternative like Evernote, you’ll have to pay for either the Productivity or Professional plans.

For me, however, the free plan is perfect for my note-taking needs. I’ve found it to be one of the best apps out there.
