JACKSONVILLE, FL — Jacksonville Fires and Rescue Marshalls are working to find out if record cold weather played a role in the fires that devastated local businesses on Christmas Eve.
The JFRD crew first entered the building to ensure that there were no people or pets inside the building during the fire.
It soon became apparent that the structure was unstable due to the growing fire, and firefighters on site had to be pulled out to attack the blaze from the outside.
Video of the scene showed a large column of smoke rising from the pile of rubble where the building once stood.
According to the business report, the structure belongs to Schur & Company and is advertised as a pump repair facility that specializes in pumps for pulp and paper mills.
I tried to contact the company by phone, but no one answered.
JFRD’s Eric Prosswimmer told Action News Jax that the first floor of the building was mostly empty, while the second floor contained building materials.
“Unfortunately, this building is a total loss. The roof is gone. Everything in it is gone. And we are sorry about that,” Eric said. “It’s not a time when you want to see a business go bankrupt or have a problem like this, but I’m grateful that no one was hurt.”
JFRD said it was unclear at this time what caused the fire or if cold weather was a factor. The fire department is currently investigating.
