After the Buffalo Bills’ safety collapsed on the field, messages of support for Dumar Hamlin flooded in from sports around the world.
Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest and fell on his back shortly after tackling Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins during an NFL game on Monday. I am in critical condition at the hospital.
Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson tweeted shortly after the incident, writing: I’m praying for you @HamlinIsland. I wish you good health and safety. ”
Arizona Cardinals defensive end JJ Watt tweeted, “The game doesn’t matter. Dummer Hamlin’s life matters. It’s okay. Please.”
The University of Pittsburgh’s Pittsburgh Panthers football program, where Hamlin played college football, added: We love you, 3. We are praying for you.
Hamlin, a Pennsylvania native, joined the Bills in 2021 as a sixth-round draft pick from the University of Pittsburgh. He has played in every game this season.
The Bills’ game against the Bengals was suspended at 5:58 in the first quarter and then officially postponed. The NFL said details regarding next steps will be announced “at the appropriate time”, adding that Hamlin’s health is a top priority.
“Sending our thoughts and prayers to Damar,” the Bengals’ official Twitter account wrote after the incident.
The Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants are among the NFL teams sending messages of support.
The Chargers said the organization’s “thoughts and prayers are with Dummer Hamlin of Bills and Bills Mafia” and the Giants said the team is “praying for Dummer Hamlin and the entire Buffalo Bills organization.”
NBA star Donovan Mitchell told reporters after scoring a historic 71 points in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ win over the Chicago Bulls on Monday, “I want to keep the Bills safe.”
“I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never seen it,” Mitchell said. “But I know you’re praying for him and his family… all of us in the locker room are praying for him. I hope it goes well.”
