Spanish authorities have announced that they have dismantled an organization that sent more than 5,000 tons of hazardous e-waste from the Canary Islands to several African countries.
Among them are Senegal, Nigeria, Mauritania and Ghana.
According to the Spanish Customs and Civil Guard, “a criminal gang that has transported more than 5,000 tons of electronic hazardous waste from Gran Canaria to Africa in the past two years has made a profit of €500,000.”
The waste was sent by ship “primarily” to Mauritania, Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal.
Forty-three were arrested for “environmental crimes, counterfeiting, and suspicion of membership in a criminal organization.”
The latter was to “take the waste out of the legal route” with the help of “a management company that allegedly falsified the origin and management documents.”
This waste was presented as second-hand goods to be sent to these African countries.
On the other hand, scrap containing mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic and phosphorus must be handed over to a licensed company for decontamination.
