The South African meerkat radio telescope team has been recognized by the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) for a spectacular series of observations in radio astronomy. Notable works included images of the galactic central region and stunning radio bubbles. The 2023 Group Achievement Award has significant impact in ranking the organization among the top major astronomy and physics programs worldwide.
The Meerkat project grew out of a desire to improve South Africa’s Square Kilometer Array (SKA) precursor telescope. This telescope is expected to be a powerful instrument in its own right. The Meerkat project is a project of the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) under the National Research Foundation (NRF).
Recent previous winners include: EAGLE Simulation Team (2022), Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Team (2021), Astropy Project Team (2020), Galaxy Zoo Team (2019), Planck Team (2018), Laser Interferometer Gravitational Waves Observatory (LIGO) team (2017).
