Authorities in South Africa are searching for a tiger that fled the corral of a private farm near Johannesburg over the weekend, injuring a man and killing a dog.
Local media said the man survived but was taken to hospital.
In the Walkerville area south of Johannesburg, residents are being warned to stay vigilant and not face the animal as a group of about 30 people scour the area where the latest footprints were spotted.
Officials who led the search suspected a female tiger named Shiva was hiding in the bushes for shade, and when the summer heat subsided or needed a drink of water. I was hoping it would start working again.
Members of the Special Police Task Force began the search on Monday and were expected to take over from local community police groups and SPCA animal protection groups.
Gresham Mundy, who heads the local police group, said the top priority was to dart the animals and bring them back safely. Then he said that the tiger had escaped.
“The thieves apparently cut the fence to get in and out of the property. The tiger saw it and used the cut fence to escape,” Mandy said.
A large cat, believed to be 8 years old, was kept as a pet on a farm.
