Moroccan police said on Sunday that 18 people were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of being involved in vandalism during a match of the national soccer championship in Kouribuga, Morocco, 120 kilometers from Casablanca.
The incident occurred during the 12th day counted match of Morocco’s first league, Bothola, with Rabat’s AS FAR winning 2–0 against Olympic in Coubuga.
The suspects, including two minors, were arrested after a “clash” between fans inside the stadium turned into a “throwing stones” and 12 police officers were injured.
A judicial investigation has been launched, police added, but it was not specified if the fan suffered any injuries, nor was there any mention of the possibility of property damage.
In recent months, DGSN has reported several arrests for violence at stadiums in Morocco, where football is a popular sport.
Morocco’s football federation announced on Tuesday that it had imposed sanctions on several clubs following the incident, ranging from simple fines to games played behind closed doors.
Morocco, which became the first African country to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup held in Qatar last month, will host the next edition of the World Cup championship from February 1-11.
Stadiums in Morocco are frequent scenes of hooligans, including fights between “ultras” inside and outside the stadium.
After the deaths of two fans in early 2016, authorities disbanded the Ultras group to combat the phenomenon, banned all distinctive signs (slogans and banners) at stadiums, and re-opened in 2018. allowed their existence.
