Milwaukee — Milwaukee’s Westtown neighborhood, west of downtown, is seeing a business resurgence. This is because several new businesses and organizations have announced their move to the area.
On Thursday, the American Heart Association confirmed to Spectrum News 1 that it will move its Milwaukee offices to the Avenue development this spring.
In recent months, other companies, including Fiserv, have announced they are moving their operations to the region.
This means a lot for small businesses in the Westtown neighborhood, which are looking to increase business person traffic during the day.
Ken and Tonya Hughes own Dawg City, a hot dog stand located inside the Third Street Market Hall. Most of their business comes from nearby workers, especially during his lunch rush.
“85% of the lunch rush is from local businesses in the area, which helps a lot,” says Ken Hughes.
The increased number of facilities in the area can be a selling point for companies looking to relocate. Having something like the Third Street Market Hall goes a long way.
Market Hall general manager Eric Kaye said he knows it can be a great recruiting tool.
“When relocating from the suburbs to the Westown area, employees can get another comfort that complements their workspace. After work, lunch options, happy hour,” Kay said.
Downtown Milwaukee CEO Beth Weirick explains that the more dining and entertainment options the area has, the more attractive it can be for up-and-coming businesses.
Accessibility to indoor walkways between downtown buildings can also have a positive impact. The Third Street Market Hall provides access to many downtown office buildings via an elevated walkway.
“The competition for talent really does exist, and one thing we keep hearing from CEOs is, ‘Place, place, place still matters,’” says Weirick.
