Wilkes-Barre’s ski shop owner says snow brings new people to winter sports.
WILKESBARRE, Pennsylvania — It was raining on the streets of Wilkesbarre on Monday, but snow was falling elsewhere, forcing people out the doors of the Top of the Slope ski shop on South Main Street.
“When it snows, it gets even more momentum,” explains owner Michael Miscavige.
“Maybe a little, because when the weather warms up you don’t need a new jacket.”
But that’s mainly because there aren’t many new skiers coming to the store.
“It certainly is,” said Miscavige. “The more snow there is, the more beginner skiers and people who are just starting to ski. I know.”
The store owner told Newswatch 16 that die-hard skiers and snowboarders still come to the store regardless of the weather, and are particularly interested in upgrading their equipment this year.
“People come for new skis, new boots, and snowboarders are updating their gear,” explains Miscavige.
Despite the lack of snow here, Miscavige says bus trips to New York’s ski fields are doing quite well.
“I just went on a bus trip to Hunter Mountain last week. The bus was full. It was a great time. I will be traveling again. I’m going to a place called Bel Air on February 15th. Tickets are $125. Please have a good time on the bus.”
