The Nike store and the Regal Meridian 16 are two downtown staples that have announced closures.
Seattle — Time is running out for another downtown Seattle staple.
One of downtown Seattle’s longest-running movie theaters is closing next month. The Regal Meridian 16 cinema is his one of 39 cinemas nationwide.
Seattle resident Jeri Cooper said, “It’s terrible because it’s common for me to eat somewhere else and watch a movie. (It’s) convenient in a nice theater.”
Cineworld, which owns the theater, filed for bankruptcy in September.
The Meridian 16 and downtown Nike store location have been added to the list of businesses that have closed their doors downtown in recent years.
Seattle resident Florence Vollmer said, “There are fewer people, many retailers have closed, and many are gone.”
Officials from the Downtown Seattle Association emailed KING 5 with the following statement:
“Retailers have been evaluating their changing needs for space and scale over the last few years. We have seen it in urban areas even before the pandemic. Niketown has been a big part of our retail mix for many years.
“We are thrilled with the several newcomers that have opened their doors in recent months, and we need to ensure a safe and welcoming environment to foster their success. This is improving downtown and is a top priority for our city, Leader.
According to the association, 2.2 million visitors visited downtown last month, an 8% increase compared to December 2021. The dashboard also showed that in December 2022, the number of employees returning to the office had improved for the third month in a row.
“I want Seattle to survive and thrive. You know, I love Seattle,” Cooper said.
