He spent $1,200 on balloons, rented glassware, and bought a lot of champagne,” Cornett explains. “About 15 minutes to the ‘door’ and we got a power outage.” “We’ve been on the road all along, so it’s just another bump in the road for us,” he said. “I think I was in high spirits that night.” “I think we had to get the worst out of the way until something better came along.” Power outages continued for several days in some parts of Midtown. The storm also robbed them of their phone and internet service, which wasn’t restored until Thursday, with Harlow’s saying it lost a week’s worth of business.

But then a holiday party pooper of epic proportions arrived. A massive power outage hits Midtown.
“All the lights were out. The kitchen stopped working. It was pretty wild,” Howson said. “It was pitch black here…the entire block was pitch black. In fact, several blocks were blacked out.”
That night there was a line at the door of Harlow’s Nightclub just down J Street.
“We haven’t had a New Year’s party in two years, so we were really looking forward to it,” said Jim Cornett, owner and operator of Harlow. “Now we have him three.”
The club was preparing to host New Year’s Eve revelry for the first time since the pandemic shut down parties.
“We brought balloons. We spent $1,200 on balloons, rented glassware, and bought a lot of champagne,” Cornett explains. “It was about 15 minutes to the ‘door’ and the power went out.”
Both locations have successfully benefited from the shutdown after years of COVID-era obstacles.
“We’ve had speed bumps all along, so it’s another bump in the road for us,” he said.
They also appreciate their understanding of their customers.
“People were certainly disappointed, but people were also really cool,” Howson said. “I think I was in high spirits that night.”
And they remain hopeful, not allowing this blackout to set the stage for next year.
“This year ended with a bang,” Howson said. “I think we had to stay out of the worst until something better came along.”
Power outages continued for several days in several locations in Midtown. The storm also took away phone and internet service, which was not restored until Thursday.
Harlows said he lost a week’s worth of trading.
Red Rabbit staff told KCRA 3 they were short of $35,000 due to the power outage.
