BARABOO, Wisconsin — Erin Benson grew up around ice skating rinks because her older brother played hockey. She started playing when she was four years old.
Now a junior at Baraboo High School, Benson is part of Badger Lightning, a five-school co-op women’s hockey team.
“These girls, we all love hockey and we can all relate to it. It’s something we all enjoy. We like to mess around and have fun,” said Benson.
She is the captain of head coach Rick Kapenner, who called Benson a quiet leader.

“She’s the nicest girl in the world. Over the years, if someone accidentally injures someone or penalizes someone in-game, she feels terrible about it. is just her,” said Capener.
Benson also played tennis for Baraboo. She doesn’t have a favorite sport, but she encouraged her tennis teammates to hit the ice.
“She was doing hockey recruiting, especially freshman recruiting. She used to ask people, ‘Have you ever played hockey? Oh, better get started,” said Ashley Sheffran, Benson’s tennis teammate.
Benson played doubles in tennis and won the Most Valuable Player award.
“She is one of the most kind-hearted people I have ever met. You have an incredible drive and passion,” said Annie Langkamp, another of Benson’s tennis teammates.
Benson hasn’t decided on a college yet, but says she wants to study nursing.

She is involved with Future Farmers of America, 4-H, National Honor Society, Student Council, and other charitable causes. With all her activities, she still manages her 3.98 GPA in high school.
“Getting good grades is just an expectation and a personal goal of mine,” Benson explained. “I try to set aside time throughout the day and use it wisely.”
Balancing her activities is a lesson that sports has taught her well. Her friends say Benson will be welcome wherever she goes next year.
“If I could describe her in one color, it would be yellow, and she looks very happy. She’s just a lovely, warm person,” Chefran said.
If one thing is certain, Benson doesn’t mind mixing it up on ice and helping others.
