PITTSBURGH (AP) — Marc Scheifel scored two goals, including a go-ahead goal late in the second period and the Winnipeg Jets in a 4-1 game between the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.
Scheifele’s first goal put the Jets ahead with 2:02 left in the second from a clean feed by Blake Wheeler. Nikolaj Ehlers doubled his advantage 22 seconds later, leading the rising Winnipeg to his seventh victory in the last eight games.
David Ricci stopped 22 shots for the Jets that dominated the depleted Penguins, especially in front of the Pittsburgh crease.
Drew O’Connor scored his second goal of the season for the Penguins, but Pittsburgh struggled to keep up with the Jets. With injured defensemen Chris Letang and Jeff Petrie missing and Marcus Petterson sick, Pittsburgh allowed the Jets to control play for most of the night.
Dustin Tokarski, who helped relieve Casey DeSmith in a win against Vancouver on Tuesday, played well in his first start with the Penguins but faced a steady barrage. Tokarski finished with Pittsburgh where he had 36 saves. With just three wins in his last 10 games, Pittsburgh sits eighth in his conference standings for the Eastern halfway through the season.
The Penguins have made the playoffs for 16 consecutive years, the longest streak in any major North American professional sport. They’ve endured back-to-back first halves, at least in a stretch where he lost 2 straight in 6 games and won 12 out of 14 games.
Winnipeg had no such problem, playing the game for the second time in two nights and was barely tired.
Wheeler scored on a power play after scrambling before 11:19 to give Winnipeg the lead.
Dylan Samberg’s redirect was overturned in the replay after the Penguins successfully challenged the Jets into zone offside. rice field. Neil Pionck’s goal was waved off by Pierre-Luc, who ruled that Dubois had interfered with Tokarski’s play.
Grace allowed the Penguins to tie it when O’Connor aimed a cross ice feed from Kasperi Kapanen to Richtsch.
I temporarily stopped the tide, but I couldn’t stop it. Scheifele’s first goal put the Jets in front, staying second late and third in his second night and season with 6:39 on 26, giving the Jets 4 in their last 20 games with Pittsburgh. I won my second time.
Note: Kyle Conner assisted Ehrer’s goal, extending his scoring streak to nine games (6G, 9A). … Kapanen’s assist was his 100th of his career. … Cole Parfetti set a career-high with his 3 assists for the Jets.
