“Come on.”
These are the words of a local business owner frustrated by the homelessness crisis.
His restaurant has been the target of numerous crimes, including arson and vandalism.
That’s why he threatens to take matters into his own hands.
A business owner recently purchased a shuttle bus to help keep the homeless away from the restaurant.
But the mayor of San Bernardino wants him to be patient.
“They set fire to them here, brand new furniture that should have been in my restaurant,” said Max Zahir, owner of Celebrities Sports Grill.
Zahir is disgusted and says his business has been the target of arson, theft and vandalism by homeless people for the past two years.
“I’m very frustrated because we pay taxes,” Zahir said.
“My job isn’t to worry about the homeless, it’s to prevent the homeless from burning down my business or trying to kill my customers and employees, but it’s too dangerous and I’m I am very annoyed.
Zahir says he’s taking matters into his own hands.
“Here’s my message to the City of San Bernardino: Give me two weeks to take care of this homeless person or I will,” Zaheer said in a video posted to social media.
Zahir has vowed to use this shuttle bus, which he recently purchased, to begin eliminating the homeless who frequent the area around his Sports Grill.
“I just give them a ride, free food and whatever means they need and they are happy to get on the bus and drop them off where they came from,” Zahir said.
“We have to do something about it and we are taking steps,” Mayor Helen Tran said.
The homeless crisis is one of the city’s top priorities, Tran said, including a new navigation center that houses 200 homeless people and offers services to help with mental illness, substance abuse, and employment. Plans are underway to resolve
“Make sure everyone is safe, everyone is contained, and there is not much disruption in our community,” Tran said.
According to Tran, last year’s survey found that the homeless population had increased by 20% to about 1,300.
She plans to lower those numbers in the coming months, but Zahir is still skeptical.
“Every mayor, every politician has made the same promise,” Zahir said.
But Mayor Tran says things are already moving.
The city will start a new homeless count on January 26th and declare the homeless crisis a state of emergency on February 1st.
