LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) – For years, there has been pressure to revitalize downtown Las Vegas. Now, a business that has been a big part of that effort over the past decade has been relocated due to safety concerns.
The Hydrant Club, a dog boarding, training and social club that no longer operates on East Fremont Street, closed last Saturday.
Not far from Atomic Liquor you may notice a large yellow fire hydrant. This is Tony Hsieh’s brainchild for his non-doggie business. Owner Kathy Brooks says safety concerns in the East Fremont/Downtown area have forced the location to close.
“We officially closed on December 31st. The last day of our day school, the last day we had classes, was the 29th, about two hours after the last dog left the building, about two blocks away. Two people were shot at a distance,” Brooks said.
Ten years ago, Brooks moved to Vegas just to start a business.
“I worked in Silicon Valley for many years. Roughly 2010-2011, I wanted to do something different, and that was the CEO of Zappos at the time, a longtime friend of mine. I wasn’t quite sure what Tony Hsieh was…Are you going to Las Vegas this summer?” Brooks shared. His apartment wall was plastered with sticky notes with hopes and dreams for downtown.
“There were about a dozen to a dozen sticky notes that had something to do with dogs,” Brooks revealed. Brooks says Shay works with her every week to open Hydrant’s club and hopes his legacy, his commitment to downtown revitalization, will live on, but she just stays. I can’t.
“The kinds of threats that really led me to the decision that this region is no longer a safe place for independent small businesses are things like gun violence and the threat of large groups of unruly individuals. It was like.”
“When 100 tall, can-drinking guys are being beaten and stoned in the middle of the street with their bikes on their rear tires, you can put your bike in front of your property. and you ask them really politely, you’re not sabotaging business and I’m being called by all sorts of names.What am I going to do? Brooks asked.
As of now, the business does not have a physical location. Brooks is trying to find a new location, but has clarified that there’s zero chance it’s near the same area.
For now, Brooks runs his dog training business, Unleashed Leadership, where he can while he searches for a new permanent location.
