Cottage Grove, Wisconsin — Drinking alcohol is one of the most popular activities people take part in New Year’s Eve celebrations, but often overlooked is finding a car to get home.
Founded in 1935, the Tavern League of Wisconsin has been helping Wisconsin residents get home safely for almost 20 years.
Debbie Stueber is the owner of Doubledays Bar and president of the Dane County Tavern League.
“Choosing a drink can be difficult, but choosing a safe ride home is easy,” Stuber said.
There are now 2,006 SafeRide locations throughout Wisconsin. According to Stueber, the best thing about the program is that it’s free for customers.
“The taxi company keeps half and gives me the other half and I turn it into a tavern league,” Stuber said.
The SafeRide program has provided 1 million free rides since its inception in 2004.
“For $175 a year, bar owners becoming members of the Tavern League is a great incentive. It entitles them to purchase vouchers at a discounted price, giving patrons a safe ride home. ,” says Stueber.
She said 1,000,000 is a lot of free rides, but she thinks that number could be higher if more people knew about the program.
She recommends going out to ask the bartender if they offer a SafeRide option.
