Madison, Wisconsin — While many Wisconsin people will be out in 2023, health leaders and law enforcement are calling on people to get home safely.
Mercy Greenwald is a bartender at Madison’s Players Sports Bar & Grill, and she said one of the most important things you can do when you go to a bar is get to know your bartenders.
“I’ve bartended at a few bars, and this is really like a community-based bar for families,” says Greenwald.
At 11am on New Year’s Eve, there was one person at every bar seat at the Players Sports Bar & Grill, and everyone knew Greenwald.
“I brought people home, Mark brought people home. People say, ‘I live right next to him and I make sure he gets home safely.’ I guess,” said Greenwald.
Greenwald said her bar is often filled with people who are suffering from something.
“We all look out for each other because we don’t want anyone to get hurt. We’ve seen people’s ups and downs right,” said Greenwald.
Mark Kroon has been a Players owner for 34 years and grew up in Madison.
“There is no other business or job that allows you to make so many friends,” Kroon said.
Kroon said his bar is a true community bar, a place where everyone knows each other, which is a big help when shutting someone down for your own safety.
“We usually call other bars to let them know ‘someone has eaten too much and he’s coming to you’. It’s like a nice little family with all the bars.” ‘ said Kroon.
Players Sports Bar & Grill also participates in the SafeRide program, offering free rides home to those in need.
Kroon said if someone drinks too much and needs a ride, they can ask the bartender about the program.
