Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was welcomed by South Africa’s foreign minister for a meeting in Pretoria on Monday.
“Last year, 2022, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Africa and the Russian Federation. and economic freedom.”
South Africa, a continental power, has resisted Western pressure to denounce Russia and has defended its neutral position in the conflict in Ukraine.
At a press conference ahead of the meeting, Mr Pandor said the talks would help “strengthen already good relations” between the two countries.
Sitting alongside Lavrov, she described Russia as a “valuable partner.”
South Africa recently assumed the presidency of BRICS, a group that includes Brazil, Russia, India and China, challenging the dominant global governance structure led by the US and Europe.
Last week, it announced it would host 10 days of joint maritime exercises with Russia and China off the port cities of Durban and Richards Bay in February.
