Raleigh, North Carolina (WNCN) — While many of us rely on major retailers to shop for the holidays and year-round, many smaller local businesses also look to us for support.
The cost of having space for these new business owners to launch and create can make it difficult for them to get off the ground.
“Traditional coworking spaces are office spaces and internet spaces. [access] Meanwhile, many business owners needed a place to create,” says Johnny Hackett Jr.
He runs The Factory, Raleigh’s first co-manufacturing space. New Business If his owner wants to make his own products, finding space at home can be difficult. It can also be expensive to rent space and buy equipment.
“That hurdle has been removed, and another hurdle about access to this equipment needed to create this product,” said Hackett.
The factory has equipment and computer software that creators can use to do everything from candle making and cosmetics to T-shirt printing, photography and digital design work.
Hackett staff provide training and guidance, even for those new to the machine.
Shopify research shows that business owners spend an average of $40,000 in their first year, much of it on space and equipment. For a small fee, companies can become members of The Factory.
“As a new business owner with a new idea, you can come here and get that idea off the ground,” Hackett said.
When entrepreneurs finish creating their products, they sell out in Hackett’s storefront called the Black Friday Market. These items are sold free of charge.
The storefront also has products from companies that manufacture their products elsewhere. This is just another way Hackett removes hurdles for his owner of a local business.
The owner of Therapeutic Bath Salts is one of the people who created them at The Factory and sell them on the Black Friday Market.
“She’s literally always here, making products from sunrise to sunset. I’ve seen her teach and show other people how to make those products.” Hackett said.
Less than a year after launching The Factory, Hackett says it has helped nearly 100 companies to date. In the past four months, these entrepreneurs have sold over $250,000 of his product.
“We just want to play our role as small business owners in retail,” she said.
