Quincy (WGEM) – Morning Amtrak service between Quincy and Chicago will resume on January 16, after a three-month hiatus due to staffing issues.
Holly Kane, executive director of Quincy, said she’s excited about its return. Many tourists prefer her four-hour train to the eight-hour bus, she said, so they like the quick and affordable transportation.
She said afternoon and evening services were available, but the lack of morning services affected tri-state residents.
“It affected seven cities along the route and definitely affected Quincy,” she said. We know the university has definitely been impacted by visitors and students who don’t have transportation just to get in the car and travel the way they need to.”
She said people prefer to take trains, especially during the winter months, to avoid dangerous driving conditions.
Officials at the Quincy Chamber of Commerce also said they were happy to resume services.
President and CEO Bruce Guthrie says railroads are a very important mode of transportation for the business community. He said people could catch trains earlier, work while traveling, and return to Quincy in the evening.
The business community has been feeling the effects of the unavailability of services over the past three months, he said.
“It was tough at times because the business community has regular trips to Chicago that were interrupted and we had to make other arrangements. Business trips or Zoom calls or anything of that nature. could be,” Guthrie said.
