Brentwood point guard MJ Coleman made a sudden quick move to the basket Tuesday night just as he raced into the end zone en route to scoring 12 touchdowns in the fall as a receiver. It took him a month to lose his ten pounds from the football season and regain his basketball speed and agility.
“When he’s outside, he’s my safety blanket,” said coach Ryan Bailey.
Coleman scored 11 points in the first quarter to set the tone for Brentwood who improved to 3-0 in the Gold Coast League after an 88-77 win over hosts Campbell Hall. Parker Turner led Brentwood with 23 points. Jordan Houegban scored five 3s for him, 17 points for him, Coleman for 15, James Olofson for 12 points and he added 10 rebounds.
Tanner Jones scored 18 points at Campbell Hall. Campbell Hall trailed him 27-7 and in the 3rd quarter he trailed by as much as 20 points before in the 4th he was close to 8 points.
Asked about Brentwood’s success, Coleman said: We know our roles and we love each other. ”
It also helps to have Bailey as your coach. He used his 11 players in the first half, calling timeouts when needed, and somehow his team came out victorious without being overly sized.
“No, I’m not surprised,” said Bailey. “I know what my men are capable of. We embrace the underdog role.”
Crossroads kept pace with Brentwood with a 62-57 win over Windward. Isaiah Chappell led the crossroads with his 22 points. Nasir Luna gave Windward his 14 points.
Foothill 65, Villa Park 56: The Knights (18 wins and 1 loss) have won 13 straight games. Isaiah Bernard has 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Orange Lutheran 80, Mater Dei 72: The Lancers pull off a Trinity League upset.
Colony 57, Glendora 47: Jadin Simpson scored 21 points for the Colony and Denzel Hines scored 20.
Thousand Oaks 69, Westlake 60: Elias Chin scored 32 points in Thousand Oaks. Trent McLean had 14 rebounds and five blocks. Kayden Elsokary scored his 22 points at Westlake.
Agora 33, Oaks Christian 23: Nasir Meyer scored 16 points in the Marmonte League win to lead Agoura (3-0).
Heritage Christian 69, Village Christian 65: In the Olympic League showdown, Heritage Christian Giovanni Gorey finished with 23 points and Te Simmons with 19 points.
Rancho Christian 64, Riverside Poly 55: Chris Holland led the poly with 18 points.
Valencia 71, Hart 68: Mika Value leads Valencia with 21 points.
Saugus 72, Canyon 57: Max Tengan scored 29 points for Saugus.
West Ranch 85, Castaic 45: The Wildcats (19-1) scored 19 points from Jakari Miles.
Corona Centennial 80, Norco 27: The Huskies improved to 15-3.
