PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A string of break-ins in southeastern Portland are just the latest example of a significant increase in robberies and businesses targeted for robbery.
According to data obtained by the Portland Police Department from October 2021 to October 2022, the number of burglaries in the city increased by more than 1,000 from the previous year.
Ritual Dyes, a yarn store in Portland, installed a gate at its front door in response to Friday morning’s break-in.
Rachel Bratcher, owner of Ritual Dyes on Division Street, said: “It’s the first time it’s happened to us.”
Urbanite was broken into and robbed Thursday night. Then on Saturday morning, Ship John, also on Division Street, was burgled.
“Small businesses are a little more vulnerable, so you’ll notice an uptick around the holidays,” Bratcher said.
Bratcher says he reached out to Ship John owners and noticed something familiar in their surveillance videos.
“Looking at the footage, they looked like the same person, just what they were wearing and the time they broke in,” she said.
Data from October 2018 to October 2019 shows a significant increase in break-ins across Portland from 2018 to 2019, with over 4,500 burglaries and over 1,000 burglaries reported. In the Richmond neighborhood along Division Street, data showed robberies doubled from 100 in 2018-2019 to more than 200 in 2021-2022.
Bratcher added a gate to her door after the weekend, prompting several neighbors to take extra steps to protect their business. She hopes that surveillance can provide information to someone.
“I think it’s really possible that someone will see them or realize they may be in the business,” she said.
