Milwaukee — Milwaukee’s fire department reopened Monday after being closed for nearly six years.
Station 28 is at 424 N. 30th Street with stops on the west side of the city. It was closed in 2017 due to budgetary reasons. Now it’s back and serving the west side of the city.
The nearby Wauwatosa Fire Department will begin accommodating engines and firefighters at a station off 64th Street in Milwaukee near the border of the two cities.
The Milwaukee Fire Department and Wauwatosa Fire Department are participating in a pilot program aimed at reducing response times and using resources more efficiently. This program includes making better use of opportunities for interaction among Milwaukee County’s 14 fire departments.
“What we have here is a direct result of intergovernmental and interagency communication and collaboration between the Milwaukee Fire Department and the Wauwatosa Fire Department, and this is a small part of all our shared services,” said Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipsky said.
For the first time since 1956, the City of Milwaukee has added a fire engine and fire station as part of a shared services agreement and pilot program.na
