Photographer Johnny Nunez reveals the history of hip-hop

Ask anyone in the music industry and they’ll tell you that Johnny Nunez is the man.

For 25 years, he’s captured hip-hop history frame by frame, finding photography while working as a pizza delivery boy in his native Brooklyn.

Today, he is a professional and loved by some of the biggest names in the music industry.

“I like to capture artists who are not posing,” Nunez said. “For me it’s an emotion. An image is like an emotion suspended in time.”

Nunez will step in front of the lens as he prepares to go on a national tour with his 25-year archive.

The idea started last month when we hosted a pop-up shop selling some of our favorite shots, including photos by Q-Tip, Pharrell and Mos Def.

Nunez said his personal favorites are with his friends, rapper Fat Joe and the late Big Pang.

But it’s the iconic shot of Jay-Z that gets him most noticed.

“I love hip-hop,” Nunez said. “Shoot what you like best.”

Nuñez also launched a new website, johnnynunez.com.

He’s also gearing up to do a residency with WQHT, known as Hot 97, and shares his thoughts on having been at the forefront of the music genre over the past quarter century.
