One Eau Claire family came across the app Likee on their daughter’s phone. Her father, Eric Hendrickson, said the content raised concerns.
“When I clicked and jumped into the app, I saw inappropriate content posted by other people and it made me uneasy. This young girl was trying to send me a message.
A review of Bark, an app that monitors children’s online presence, shows that other parents are also concerned about sexual content and predators targeting Likee’s children.
“We thought we were fine. You know, we have all these parental controls set up. ,” Hendrickson said.
Dr. Justin Patchin, professor of criminal justice at UW-Eau Claire, says Hendrickson’s situation is more common than people think.
“Many of these new or popular apps can get a lot of attention in a short period of time and cause problems for administrators as they cannot keep up with the demand and reporting of inappropriate content,” Patchin said. Said.
Patchin encourages parents to discuss online safety with their children.
