Celebrity Indian-American chef and Deloitte global CEO honored for enriching and strengthening society and democracy
Carnegie Corporation’s 2022 Big Immigrants list includes two Indian-Americans: celebrity TV host and food expert Padma Lakshmi and Punit Renjen, global CEO of professional services firm Deloitte. rice field.
The 2022 class of great immigrants is made up of naturalized citizens from 32 countries whose contributions and actions have enriched and strengthened our societies and democracies, and come from a variety of backgrounds. .
Since 2006, the Corporation has named nearly 700 great immigrants, according to a Carnegie release, making it one of the largest online databases of its kind.

The 2022 winner is the 17th in class and will be recognized on July 4th with a full public service announcement in The New York Times and tributes on social media.

Lakshmi is the creator, host and executive producer of the Hulu series Taste the Nation, which features food made by immigrant, indigenous and black communities, and is a recent James Beard Award winner.
She is also the host and executive producer of “Top Chef,” a New York Times bestselling author, and a published memoir, cookbook, and children’s book.

The former model is a co-founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America, an artist ambassador for immigrant rights for the ACLU, and a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme.
Through shows and culinary adventures, Lakshmi wants people to think about the origins and politics of what you consume.
Born in India, Lakshmi immigrated to the United States at the age of four and is a frequent speaker on immigration rights.
Renjen grew up in India and at the age of 18 received a Rotary Foundation scholarship to the United States to attend Willamette University. It changed his life. In 2015, he became CEO of Deloitte Global, the first Asian-born person to head one of the world’s largest professional services firms.
He was re-elected in 2019 and is also a member of Deloitte’s Global Board of Directors. Prior to his current position, from 2011 until 2015 he served as Chairman of Deloitte LLP (Deloitte US). He also served as CEO of Deloitte Consulting from 2009 until 2011.
Renjen was named Global Indian of the Year by The Economic Times in 2022 and two years earlier received the Oregon History Makers Medal in recognition of his business leadership.

His name frequently appears on lists of top consultants and business leaders. Renjen has served on the Board of Trustees of Willamette University. The university awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2019 and listed him as a notable alumni.

Citizenship is the ultimate goal of integration, and one of the Corporation’s long-term priorities is to encourage eligible immigrants to naturalize.
For more than a decade, the company has worked with other philanthropic partners to support the New American Campaign led by the Immigration Legal Resource Center.
To date, the campaign and its national network of non-profit partners have helped over 540,000 lawful permanent residents (LPRs), known as green card holders, apply for citizenship.

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, cited by the Carnegie Corporation, said there were 9.2 million LPRs eligible for naturalization in 2021. The Great Immigrants campaign aims to raise awareness among the LPR, the general public and policy makers, it said.
