MILWAUKEE — Aaron Rodgers said on Tuesday’s “The Pat McAfee Show” that he’s still deciding what to do with the future of the NFL, but I’m Pete for Spectrum News 1. I had the opportunity to speak with Doherty.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette and USA Today Network-Wisconsin writer covers the Packers and the NFL and recently wrote about what the Packers would get in a trade for Rodgers.
Dennis: Do you think the Packers will trade Aaron Rodgers this offseason?
Pete:do not know. I think my gut will tell me when the push comes. My confidence level in that prediction is low. If I say no, you probably feel the same way. Do not know. I think it’s quite possible they’ll actually move him.
Dennis: You recently wrote about what they could get for him and made some pretty interesting comparisons to recent years. Obviously what Seattle gave Russell Wilson from Denver. 2 first round drafts, 2 second round drafts, 3 players. Wilson hasn’t played well and Rodgers is coming to the end of what has been a sluggish year for him. So what can they get for him?
Pete: Yeah, both of these would probably scare the team at that price. His contract matters too. Now, I’m assuming that whoever makes a deal for him will get a new contract of some sort to ensure they get a year or more from the guy.
I tackled this issue when I called these four HR people. All four thought first rounders, then he matched it 2-for-4. They said a first rounder and a second pretty high pick, and one of them said a first rounder. .
Dennis: Two questions for you: If this happens, when do you think they are most likely to trade him? Do you think it will keep you away from the team?
Pete: As for the timing… you can pay that option bonus anywhere, so I think it’s from March 17th to the day before the start of the regular season. So the timing can theoretically be any time. I think it will most likely be the end of February/early March.
We may wait until just before or after the draft. But I think the chances of that are pretty low. Any team looking to acquire him, any team looking to acquire him will want to know these things before free agency. I do not agree with I can’t say I know for sure, but I think he wants the field wide open in order to maximize his profits.
It seems to me that this new breed of general manager doesn’t care much about dealings within meetings or even departments.
