GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (AP) — Packers linebacker Key Walker was ejected from Green Bay’s regular-season finale for pushing a Lions team doctor who was treating an injured player. I apologized through social media.
“I react to my emotions again and take full responsibility for making stupid decisions again.” Walker tweeted on Monday. “I have since asked myself why I did what I did when my trainer was at work!! I was wrong!!”
The incident occurred Sunday during Detroit’s go-ahead touchdown drive midway through the fourth quarter of a 20-16 Lions win that prevented the Packers from reaching the playoffs. Walker was right behind two Lions staffers who attended running back for Walker’s former Georgia teammate Dandre Swift.
Lions team doctor Sean Lynch placed his left hand on Walker’s right elbow to keep it away from staff so he could check on Swift as well. Walker then shoved Lynch into his back. Packers rookie defensive forward Devonte, his tackle Wyatt, who also played for Georgia with Walker and Swift, later appeared to slam his left shoulder into Lynch’s back, but did not receive a penalty.
The camera turned a clearly frustrated Walker’s head into the locker room after his exit.
“I know I have to face everything that comes with the decisions I make and I am paying the price now,” Walker tweeted. “Also, to explain my frustration in the tunnel. I knew I couldn’t believe I did the same thing, and I’m sorry to the Detroit Lions and all the training staff, including those who I did.”
The Packers selected Walker and Wyatt in the first round of the 2022 draft, with Walker selected 22nd overall and Wyatt 28th overall.
This is the second time Walker has been ejected from a game in his rookie season. He was also ejected after shoving the Bills practice team tight end Zach Davidson to the sideline during the October 30 loss in Buffalo.
Packers coach Matt Raffler said after the game, “One player was ejected twice. “I don’t think I’ve seen that in my career. No. Whenever our players commit a personal foul, I take it very personally because I think it’s always a reflection of myself and the standards I set for these players. We have to get better and learn from it, because it is unacceptable.”
