Packers and Bellin Health Team Up to Donate AEDs and Training

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin — Brady Schrauth, an athletic trainer at Bellin Health Sports Medicine in Titletown, knows the importance of getting training in life-saving procedures, especially Hands-Only CPR.

“The more people who know how to do this, the more likely they are to help someone save that life,” Schrout said.

CPR training and the knowledge of how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) was back on the forefront of people’s minds when Buffalo Bills safety Dummer Hamlin played Cincinnati during a Monday Night Football game. After suffering a cardiac arrest during a game against the Bengals.

Hamlin trained a professional there and was working on him almost immediately.

Not when most people go into cardiac arrest.

Nearly 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital each year, according to Bellin Health.

So the more people who know how to CPR, the better.

Schrauth demonstrated Spectrum News 1 using a training mannequin.

“I like to push the mannequin down about two inches when I start, which is the right depth to push and pump my heart,” Schrauth explained. 100 to 120 compressions per minute. ”

Training is a big part of the collaboration between Bellin Health and the Green Bay Packers announced Wednesday.

The Packers will donate $100,000 to purchase 80 AEDs for schools and recreational sports leagues around the Upper Peninsula of Wisconsin and Michigan.

“The defibrillator is great,” said Green Bay Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy.

That’s why the training aspect of working with Bellin Health is so important, not just for hands-only CPR, but also for AEDs, Murphy said.

Schrauth says both trainings aren’t too difficult.

“The great thing about AEDs is that they tell you everything you need to know,” says Schrauth. “So even if you freak out and forget what’s going on, when you turn it on, it tells you exactly what to do.”

The Packers will host a large CPR training class at Lambeau Field and smaller classes throughout the region in the coming months. All of these are meant to give people tools that could potentially help save lives.
