WISCONSIN — Winter may mean cold air and snow-covered ground, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get outside.
Wisconsin hosts many outdoor events and activities this winter season.
Here are just a few of them.
ice skate
Now that the ground is frozen, many places offer ice skating, and you can rent skates at each location.
green bay
Ice skating is available at Hy-Vee Plaza during winter. Pass and skate rentals are available at the Admissions Building adjacent to the Ariens Hill side. Whether you bring your own skates or rent one, admission is $8 a day, $3 for community nights, and $15 on game days. Packages are also available.

milwaukee
Put on your skates and enjoy views of downtown at Red Arrow Park’s Slice of Ice. Skate rentals are $10 for ages 18 and up, $8 for ages 17 and under, and $6 for sharpening. In January and February you can visit the rink Monday to Thursday from 11am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 10pm and Sunday from 11am to 6pm . Check opening hours and learn more here.
Madison
Madison’s Edgewater Ice Rink is complete with surrounding fire pits and a pizza restaurant. Check the website for special skate nights. Open Wednesday-Friday 4-9 PM, Saturday 11-9 PM, and Sunday 11-7 PM. Skate rentals are $3 each. It is recommended to purchase tickets for the 60 minute time slot before going.

In addition to ice skating, Titletown also hosts tubing on Arien’s Hill. Prices are $8 for unlimited tubing a day, $4 for a single ride, $3 for community nights, and $10 for game days (single ride only).
milwaukee area
Franklin’s Rock Snow Park offers tubing on weeknights and weekends. Weekday tickets start at $20, and weekends start at $25 for a 2-hour experience. Glow tubes are one of the unique features of this hill. When the lights go out on certain Saturdays in January, the hills are lit up with colorful lights to the music. It starts at $35.

Sunburst Ski Area is a short distance from Milwaukee, but it has more than 40 chutes, 90-foot drops, and speeds of 30 mph. Open Tuesday-Thursday 3-8 PM, Friday-Saturday 9:30-9:30 PM, Sunday 9:30-7 PM. $20 all day Tuesday through Thursday, $25 for 2 hours on weekends. Learn more about.
Madison area
Portage’s Cascade Mountain is one of the larger, closer ski areas for tubing in the area. With 900 feet of snow-covered shoots, it’s sure to be an exciting and thrilling ride. However, to climb this hill all the way down, you have to prepay for a specific time slot. Off-peak hours $35 for ages 7 and up and $19 for ages 6 and under. At peak times, it’s $40 for ages 7 and up and $23 for ages 6 and under. See website for full list of opening hours.
Most of these places also offer snowboarding, skiing, and other fun winter activities.

candlelight hiking
From January 7, 2023 to February 25, 2023, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is hosting several candlelight events at parks in Badger State.
“Candlelight activities are a great way to see the park from a different perspective.
These hikes are free to low cost for participants and start around sunset. In most cases, a 2023 Wisconsin State Park admission fee or state trail pass is required to attend the event.
There are various ways to enjoy the candlelight event, such as walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Many of the events also include bonfires, hot chocolate, cider, and other refreshments.
