“This was commented to the school secretary who signed me in on Monday and handed out volunteer name badges. If you’ve been planning and preparing, you’ll be obsessed with your kids and learning. It put a smile on my face as I expected the constant gratification of a morning of volunteer work. For those with a little time to share.
The students were in good spirits, fresh off a weekend of festivities, and ready for whatever the energetic and creative teachers set them to do. Twenty children burst into the room and made their way to their allotted square of colorful rugs. Excited conversations punctuated the air before the atmosphere subsided. The class was “traveling” that month and the walls were filled with world maps and artwork the children had created for each country they had “visited”.
My youngest daughter sat in the chair next to me, and together we watched her son, my youngest grandson, Lucas, closely. Lucas enjoys class credit as both Mama and Abuela come to his aid. My daughter, who is an artist, was tasked with overseeing a small group art project and I underwent language refresher activities. A third group worked independently and the teacher was able to work closely with her fourth group. After four rotations, the national language work was completed.
That day, while the teacher was doing the opening activities, Lucas was moving on the blue squares on the carpet. He wasn’t the only one to wiggle that rainy Monday. His mother and I both stinked at him, but in truth, we didn’t mind if he wiggled a little. Learn and be honored to be in this vibrant classroom where his teacher can teach. I look forward to Monday when we can celebrate the overwhelming joy of going to school again.
I suggest you consider doing the same.
