Considering this:
Dayton Pitzer is a clear title contender after only playing six games in college and just finishing second in the Midlands.
His results so far:
- 10-1 against Nathan Taylor
- 7-3 over return qualifying Horton
- Qualifier Wolfgram returns 10-0
- Beat finalist Schultz 4-0
- Fall over All American Hillger (Hilger was winning 2-1 when he fell)
- Lost 4-0 to All-American Davison
That’s a 32-10 edge over his opponent in about an hour of riding.
With three PIAA titles at Mount Pleasant and a 100-pin finish to his HS career, Pit Wrestling’s prized heavyweight recruit insists he needs to be in the starting lineup. Here’s why:
No one has a five-year crystal ball. Traditional thinking is to redshirt him this year on the premise that he’ll be even better in four to five years, but there are so many unpredictable risks.Injuries, burnout, NCAA inexplicably canceling postseason. and not give the elderly an extra year.
pizza ready nowHe shut out the returning finalists in dominant fashion.he needs to fight now.
Maybe he won’t win the NCAA this year. Maybe he’s from his second to he’s eighth, and eventually he’ll be a four-time All-American.
If he’s wearing a redshirt, he’s probably a four-time NCAA champion. Doubtful, but possible. Maybe a super stud (Nick Feldman) shows up, but he never wins. The point is that you cannot trade definite Current, probability future.
“He’s pretty special. I wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled his red shirt. If he wrestles this year, he’ll be on the podium,” Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro told Eric Knopsnyder after Pitzer’s debut.
In all fairness, let me give you some reasons why he should wear a red shirt.
- 5 > 4. Having him in the program for 5 years because of the hype and recruitment is definitely a plus.
- 4 > 3. Great to see him and Mack Stout rounding out the dual lineup for the fourth year in a row
- The Undeniable Benefits of an Extra Year of Training to Get Stronger
But those are weak arguments. What about the hype of having a true freshman AA at heavyweight, leading Pitt to a Top 10 finish in the NCAA, and winning the ACC team title? Gavin has been given plenty of time to recruit the next big man. Does he need another year in training? He weighs only 220 pounds, but a guy weighing over 50 pounds can’t even reach the bottom base. We know he’ll be even more dominant next year (barring an injury), but he’s ready.
Iowa took off his red shirt when Spencer Lee was ready to win the NCAA Championship. Penn State threw off his redshirt when Mark Hall was ready to win his NCAA championship. Pitt should do the same as Dayton Pizzar.
