A local couple wants to create a new networking group to help others take some of the challenges out of running a small business.
The Entrepreneurs of Kawartha Lakes is designed to provide an opportunity for like-minded small business owners to connect with each other, share information and network.
Matt Lord and Lisa Towne were already working full-time when they started figuring out how to start a side business to earn extra income.
“We struggled with a lot of questions: Can we run a business? Should we run a business? What are we good at?” Towne said.
The couple decided to share recipes for delicious and nutritious pet snacks at Pooch’s Cupboard Co. Initially selling products online, in June she learned she was opening Lindsay Farmer’s Market.
The business was a huge success and sold out almost every week.
Being in the market not only increased the exposure of the couple’s products, but also broadened their knowledge as entrepreneurs.
“Almost everyone at the Farmer’s Market is an entrepreneur. Most of them either have another career or have retired from jobs that have nothing to do with the side hustle they created,” Towne said. “We all have different goals, but also different tips and experiences to share. We listened, we talked, we learned quite a bit.”
Town has similar support and “education” You may be part of a group like the Chamber of Commerce and often have time conflicts.
“Most of us have other jobs and can’t easily attend meetings and events,” Town said, adding that while the new group is private, membership is also free. . “So I decided to publish the idea[on a Facebook group]to see if there was any interest.”
They officially started their activities on January 8th and currently have 25 members.
Plans are being made to host future networking events. Evening meetups and Sunday brunch.
