OMAHA, Nebraska (KMTV) — Baked After Dark is the Benson area’s best place to pick up a sweet treat. Owner Stacey Johnson has been perfecting his cookies for five years.
“It was a labor of love,” said Johnson. “We really built it from scratch.”
Recently, however, the ingredients she used to make her cookies have become harder to come by, increasing Johnson’s expenses to purchase the things she needs to keep her business running.
Nebraska just raised its minimum wage to $10.50 an hour this year, so Johnson’s rent, gas and labor costs are also on the rise.
“I had to figure out how to keep doing what I love while still being profitable,” Johnson said.
The challenge was the perfect recipe for Johnson to decide to close the door and not raise prices any further.
“It is not right to continue to pass on these costs,” she said. “We have to find a way to do it without all the overhead.”
Her business is closed, but that’s not the end of Johnson and her cookies. She wants to continue outside of brick and mortar, she wants to be by her side for her loyal customers.
“That’s our goal,” she said. “We have to find an easier and more efficient way.”
Baked After Dark is open until January 21st.
