COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has issued an executive order banning TikTok and other Chinese-owned apps on electronic devices used by government employees.
DeWine issued an executive order Sunday shortly after being sworn into his second term.
The order prohibits “accessing social media applications, channels, and platforms owned by entities located in China, and websites of social media applications, channels, and platforms owned by entities located in China.” Prohibited.
In addition to TikTok, the directive specifically names the following websites and apps:
- Tencent QQ
- tencent video
- QQ International (QQi)
- cue zone
- Xiao Hongshu
- Shihu
- Meituan
- Tojo today
- Alipay
- shami song
- song of heaven
- Ding Talk f Ding Ding
- road number
- Ren Ren
- Yoku/Todo
- little red book
- Shihu
The order addresses apps engaging in “covert data privacy and cybersecurity practices, including the collection of personal information, behavioral usage data, biometric data, and other data contained on users’ devices.” It says it does.
The order further states that the CCP uses the app as an “information gathering mechanism.”
The second most popular web domain in the world, TikTok is second only to Google in size, according to online performance and security company Cloudflare. The platform has been criticized for not regulating misinformation on news topics, with almost a fifth of videos automatically suggested by TikTok containing misinformation.
The Biden administration and Congress have called for a similar ban to be enacted in Ohio.

The ban is one of five executive orders signed by DeWine-Sunday. In addition to banning the Chinese app, other executive orders add breastfeeding mothers to the state’s anti-discrimination policy, establish a youth mentoring program for state employees, and provide the Ohio Department of Health with an Ohio Mental Health Established an insurance office and engaged in education and training. DeWine’s second term swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Monday at noon.
