This new NYPD app is ready to push a few buttons.
The Big Apple’s top cops on Wednesday unveiled a new Citizen-like app that lets people report crimes with a simple tap of the screen.
“This is a new era in policing,” Chief Keechant Sewell said in the New York Police Department’s annual speech. “[The] Technology will promote and enhance public safety and evolve neighborhood policing. ”
of step forward app, It’s currently in development and allows users to “praise” police officers, chat about community safety concerns, and link to NYPD’s social media pages.
The app also allows New Yorkers to receive location-based safety alerts, access neighborhood crime statistics, get accident reports, and find information about district meetings.
In addition to showcasing innovative law enforcement technology, Sewell also announced the upcoming hosting of crime data-centric community town halls known as Compstat.
At meetings, neighbors can make suggestions to cops on how to improve crime-ridden or dangerous areas.
“It’s very exciting,” she said. “I think the communities we serve have their own ideas about what’s going on. [on the street],” she said.
“This is an opportunity for them to tell us what they need from the police department. You can talk about what you want.”
It wasn’t immediately clear when the app would launch or what crimes users could report from their smartphones.
