Tunisian judicial authorities have sentenced nine women charged with forming a “terrorist” group and plotting to assassinate a minister since 2016 to serve up to 25 years in prison, officials said Thursday.
Two members of the 10-person group were sentenced to 25 years in prison on Tuesday for “terrorist acts” by a criminal tribunal inside Tunis’ court of first instance.
Seven other defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three to 14 years. Another of him has been fired, according to the same source. A court has charged those convicted of planning the attack on the minister.
In 2016, a claim circulated on social media that then-Home Secretary Eddie Majidub attempted to assassinate him while visiting his parents, a claim his communications department denied.
According to Tunisian private radio Mosaïque FM, among the women convicted is a neighbor of the minister’s parents who was accused of providing information about the minister’s visit to his family. The media did not provide details.
When contacted by AFP, the justice ministry could not provide further details on the matter. The Tunisian Public Prosecutor’s Office has no spokesperson and has not been in touch with journalists for months.
