Nigerians were racing against time on Wednesday as the deadline for collecting Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) approached ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections.
Your PVC will act as your ID for voting in the next general election.
Nigeria’s electoral agency, the Independent National Electoral Commission, released a window in December for the final stages of card collection before the election.
INEC said there had been a surge of young Nigerians seeking voter card registration ahead of the election.
It also issued a statement that the PVC collection for this round will end on January 22nd, and eligible voters without cards will not be able to vote in the next ballot.
In December, election officials expressed concern about the millions of voter cards that were not collected across the country.
INEC reported that more than 6 million Nigerians have not yet received their cards.
Some Nigerians have criticized how INEC handled the distribution of cards.
Nigerian attorney Damirola Aderowo said she received an email informing her that her card was recoverable, but after standing in line for two hours, she was told the card had been “omitted.”
Presidential and parliamentary elections in Africa’s most populous country are scheduled for February 25th.
Gubernatorial and state legislative elections are scheduled for March 11.
