Allegheny Township’s new physical therapy business is affiliated with the Kiski Area School District.
The East Suburban Sports Medicine Center opened January 2nd at 451 Hyde Park Road, Hyde Park Plaza.
ESSMC, the official sports medicine provider for the Kiski district, signed a three-year exercise training contract with the district in July.
Co-owner and vice president Michael Tardio said there are two athletic trainers on staff each day to attend to student-athlete injuries on campus in grades 7 through 12.
Kiski Area Athletic Trainers Emily Strama and Nathan Sloka, licensed by East Suburban Sports Medicine, serve approximately 150 athletes in the district.
“To treat athletes in need of physical therapy, we chose Hyde Park Plaza for its convenience and proximity to school.You can walk across the street to school,” Tardio said. “But even though our name has sports medicine in it, we don’t just treat sports injuries.”
The East Suburban Sports Medicine Center opened in 1984. It is staffed by a nutritionist, therapist and athletic his trainer who is skilled in the latest physical therapy. These include physical and occupational therapy, exercise training, vestibular rehabilitation, pelvic health physical therapy, neurorehabilitation, lymphedema therapy, and hand therapy treatments.
Other co-owners are President John Bonarroti and Vice President Mariel Bonarroti Reynolds.
Allegheny Township officials applauded new businesses underway in rural townships.
In 2022, four new businesses will open in the township: a hair salon, specialty drink store, beer outlet and Taco Bell.
Additionally, the long-closed Hyde Park Plaza was purchased on September 16 for $3.8 million by Pittsburgh-area business developer and Fox Chapel resident Jeff Paul.
“It’s great to be kicking off 2023 and we already have another new business that will be a great asset not only to our residents but also to Kiski Area High School.” Supervisor James Moravito said. “This is just the beginning of what we can expect in 2023, with new businesses opening up in our town.”
Supervisor Len Steele echoes Morabito’s comments.
“We are delighted with the redevelopment of Hyde Park Plaza and the addition of East Suburban. Hyde Park Plaza is in the heart of the business district and across from the Kiski Area high and middle schools. It’s a great place,” said Steele.

Clinic director and physiotherapist Lauren Brennan has ties to the Kiski area.
Her mother is a graduate of the Kiski area, and Brennan’s family lives there.
Brennan has a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Pittsburgh and says she enjoys treating orthopedic patients, post-surgical patients, and sports-related injuries. She is certified in personalized blood flow restriction therapy.
In addition to the open therapy space, there are two private rooms. An average treatment session lasts about an hour.
“We see an average of about eight patients a day, which is pretty good for a new clinic,” says Brennan.
Allegheny Township Manager Greg Purim said economic development is vital to the Arekiski Valley.
“Township is always very happy to see new business coming into the open space in our commercial area,” said Primm. “We wish them great success and create the business they need to survive for a very long time. We appreciate East Suburban’s presence in our business community.”
Township supervisor Mike Cornes said he is excited to see new business, adding that the supervisor has been successful in attracting new commercial properties to the township. .
Korns praised Paul’s recent expansion to Hyde Park Plaza, saying Paul works closely with the township to achieve common goals.
“I am working with another property owner in the township to fill some of his units. New tenant ESSMC said it will help attract other tenants to some of the other vacant properties. I think,” said Korns.
The East Suburban Sports Medicine Center has seven physical therapy centers in Greensburg, Penn Hills, Penn Township, Plum, Monroeville, Marysville, and North Huntingdon, in addition to the Allegheny Township site.
