NEW ORLEANS — As crime in the city continues to soar, local businesses and organizations are demanding and paying for increased security. Businesses say they can’t rely on the police alone.
Willy Mae’s is a New Orleans staple. Opened in the 1950s, the corner restaurant has been serving fried chicken for 66 years. But the city’s burgeoning crime problem is, as Willie May is concerned, especially after dark. That’s where SEAL Security Chief Reginald Lowe comes in.
“With response times and the presence of NOPD, they are now grappling with manpower issues, with replacements and new chiefs,” Low Chief said.
“They said they wanted employees to stay off late and feel safe while people came to eat,” he said.
Rowe says he receives weekly calls from business owners asking for additional oversight.
“I can’t help everyone, so I’m partnering with other security companies so they can come out and help as well. The more boots on the ground, the better.” ‘ he said.
Several cars were broken into outside the Smoothie King Center Wednesday night during the Pelicans’ win over the Houston Rockets.
The Pelicans organization reached out to Michelle Woodfolk’s office, NOPD interim manager, to express its concerns. At the press conference, Woodfolk said the Saints and Pelicans have nothing to worry about.
“A couple of units placed in these areas to look for people who shouldn’t be in these areas, who don’t attend events in those areas, and to keep cars from encroaching around the Superdome and Smoothies. It’s the King Center,” said Woodfolk.
Willy Mae’s Brain Seaton says he had to call NOPD before and it took an hour to get there.
He said restaurants want to extend their opening hours so customers and employees can feel safe when they leave.
“There are safety issues with people walking home in the dark, and some of these streets are not fully lit. said.
