The Washington Wizards’ marketing department is one of the better-run groups in the NBA. Last April, the NBA team won the Innovation Award, and last July he won the International Strategy Award. The latter award is notable because Washington had Japanese and Hebrew websites last year. Wizards has social media accounts in all three languages, as well as Arabic and Chinese.
The Wizards have been thinking about their international strategy as forwards Rui Hachimura and Deni Avdija were used or targeted in a proposed trade with the Phoenix Suns that was recently leaked to the media, according to a report by ESPN. Avdija was reportedly targeted by Phoenix, and it went viral on Twitter, but I haven’t heard his name anywhere else.
The Wizards pitch him and Hachimura to the home country, so whether or not Avdija’s name was mentioned isn’t my biggest issue. So what if they get traded, whether this season or next? Will the Wizards’ international efforts go to waste?
Unfortunately, I think it will be a failure.
Some Japanese and Israeli NBA fans will remain loyal to Washington no matter what happens. But my guess is that Wizards will eventually allow those accounts to go dormant (or use them sparingly) after the season they traded. And Wizards will release content creators at the end of the season.
We also see a significant drop in the team’s various international fan groups after the player has been traded or gone elsewhere. Twice with Czech fans when Satoransky left.
But monumental basketball’s most marketable international player was Belgium’s Emma Miesmann. It wasn’t until recently that the Belgian’s favorite WNBA team was the Washington Mystics. When Emma Meesseman played here for nearly ten years, she received thousands of pageviews from Belgium. It’s been almost a decade since she started covering the team regularly in 2014 until she left last February.
Our website visitors from Belgium’s neighboring countries, such as the Netherlands and France, read (and still read) most of our content on Wizards, and they love Miesmann and her WNBA and Belgian cats. Career had little interest. But the Belgian went all-in on Emma. They still read our site primarily for WNBA content, not NBA.
Anyway, after Meesseman signed with Chicago Sky last February, the Belgians joined the Sky bandwagon, with the exception of a few like Swish Swish’s Florian Madarasz. Blog A Bull doesn’t cover Sky games like we cover Mystics games. it’s their right. So I think today they are in other places and on social media.
The decline in our website views from Belgium is largely due to her absence. It may be because I wrote several important articles about what was.
Coming back to Hachimura and Avdia, what do you think would happen to Wizards if certain digital content staff were traded? What do you think would happen to Japanese and Israeli fans overall? Comments below Please let us know at
