Milwaukee — Movie theaters are usually a busy place during the holidays. Watching movies during winter break is a tradition for many people.
Oriental Theater’s Kristen Heller said fears about the pandemic have eased a bit and she’s noticed a large influx of people.
“Night and day,” said Heller. “This time last year there was a spike. Right after Christmas, people weren’t out.”
She said she expects about a 40% increase this month compared to last holiday season.
“People take time off on vacation,” Heller said. “They’re looking for places to go, places to have fun. They’re usually having fun at home and want to get out for a bit.”
Movie buff Sarah Walker said she felt nostalgic when she stepped into the Oriental Theater.
“I used to live in Milwaukee,” Walker said. “I have seen many movies here over the years. .”
Heller said it was more than just watching the film and the memories that come with it.
“We’ll go home and have dinner and talk more about it,” Heller said. “We also see it as a community experience to be there and have a little discussion over popcorn and share stories after the fact. It’s what we love.”
