According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Morocco will participate in the soccer African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria.
“The Moroccan national team will travel to Algeria tomorrow to participate in CHAN._ Departure will be from SalĂ© airport,” the ministry said.
On Thursday morning, the Moroccan Federation (FRMF) issued a statement saying, “The final approval of the Royal Air Maroc (RAM) flight, the official carrier of the Moroccan football team from Rabat to Constantine, has not been confirmed, therefore the team’s transfer to CHAN has not been confirmed. We have announced the cancellation of our participation, from the tournament host country Algeria.
Asked in the evening, the FRMF said it was “still waiting for flight clearance”.

According to Fouzi Lekjaa, Advisor to the President of the Moroccan Federation, Mohamed Makhlouf: _”We have not received anything at the moment. Approval from the CAF (Confederation of African Football Association) which we need to receive it from the Algerian authorities”.
According to a press release, the CAF notified the FRMF on December 22 that “approval in principle has been obtained.”
Confirmation could not be obtained from the Algerian authorities.
Diplomatic sources would not say whether the Moroccan team will take a direct flight to Algeria.

CHAN for athletes competing in the national championship will be held in Algeria from January 13th to February 4th.
On 22 September 2021, Algiers closed its airspace to all Moroccan civilian and military aircraft after severing diplomatic ties with Rabat.
This deep crisis is fueled by the thorny issue of Western Sahara amid perpetual tensions between two rival brothers.
